A total of 7538 doctoral degrees were awarded in the Nordic and Baltic countries in 2008.

Approximately 6800 were awarded in the Nordic countries, while just over 700 were awarded in the Baltic´s. Compared with figures for 2007, this represented an increase by almost 350 dissertations or nearly 5 per cent. Each country had an increase in dissertations from 2007 to 2008, but the largest growth took place in Norway, with just over 200 dissertations or about 20 per cent.
