NIFU STEP is the leading Norwegian research institute for studies in innovation, research, and education. The mission of this independent social science research institute is to provide theoretical and practical insight into the dynamics of these activities, while contributing to relevant policy development.
NIFU STEP is financed by assignments and receives a core grant from The Research Council of Norway.
The institute undertakes research and analysis for a number of Norwegian and international agencies and organizations. Norwegian and overseas clients include: The Research Council of Norway, Innovation Norway, Norwegian ministries including Trade and Industry, Education and Research, Local Government and Regional Development, The European Union, The Nordic Council of Ministers, The Nordic Academy for Advanced Study, The OECD, and The Nordic Innovation Centre.
NIFU STEP aims to improve our understanding of innovation, research, and education in social systems. The institute is combining theoretical and empirical methods from a variety of research areas and disciplines and is encouraging cooperation across disciplinary frontiers. Its ambition is to perform high quality theoretical and empirical research, by expanding empirical data and interpretations, and by promoting accessible and relevant analysis for our clients. One major objective is to expand the knowledge base for innovation, research and education policy development, and to develop an international policy learning arena for researchers and policy-makers alike.
NIFU STEP has currently some 80 employees, of which 70 are researchers. The professional staff represents a variety of educational backgrounds, with the majority coming from the social sciences. About 40% hold doctorate degrees. NIFU STEP actively seeks to cultivate the theoretical and methodological expertise of its researchers. Quality control of all projects is ensured through internal control routines.
NIFU STEP participates actively in international research, and strives to contribute to the advancement of international knowledge. An important resource of NIFU STEP is its position in extensive international networks. A significant part of our research is conducted in association with international projects, including projects under the EU Framework programmes.
